Master Your Card Launches Innovative Web-based Financial Education Program with East Los Angeles Schools

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Master Your Card, a community empowerment program sponsored by Mastercard®, today joined educators from Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School in Lynwood, Calif., to launch the Master Your Card interactive, online financial education program in East Los Angeles schools. The launch marks the beginning of a community initiative aimed at providing financial education to students and empowering them to make smart financial decisions. In addition to East Los Angeles, Master Your Card is also working with schools in Baltimore, New York City, the Mississippi Delta and Richmond, Va.

“By educating young people and providing them with the information and skills they need, we are putting them on a path for financial stability and success,” said Fabián Nuñez, former speaker of the California Assembly and chair of the Master Your Card: Oportunidad Advisory Board. “Through the Master Your Card program, we are providing people of all ages with the tools, information and resources they need to confidently navigate today’s modern, digital economy.”

Master Your Card partnered with EverFi, Inc., the nation’s leading education technology company, to bring this financial education program to students at no cost to schools or taxpayers. The program uses the latest in simulation and gaming technologies to bring financial concepts to life for today’s digital generation.

“Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School is focused on preparing students to be problem solvers, lifelong learners and productive members of society,” said Hector Preciado, the school’s principal. “Financial knowledge is a foundation for all those characteristics. We are grateful for this partnership with Master Your Card, which will allow us to provide innovative resources and new opportunities to students in Lynwood Unified and the East Los Angeles community.”

The financial education program is mapped to national financial literacy standards. Taught in the classroom, the program offers more than six hours of instruction on a variety of financial topics, including credit scores, insurance, payment cards, student loans, mortgages, taxes, stocks, savings and other critical concepts. The interactive, online platform uniquely tracks the progress and performance of each user, further helping to set students on a path to financial security, stability and success.
