Financial literacy training for 5th grade Richmond students a ‘valuable investment’

Master Your Card African American Advisory Board member Rev. David Chapman joined Richmond Public School officials and fifth-grade students at J.E.B. Stuart Elementary School to celebrate and explore financial topics such as needs vs. wants, and credit and borrowing.

Fifth-graders at J.E.B. Stuart Elementary School in Richmond were taught financial literacy Friday thanks to a corporate partnership.

Students from Kandice Reid’s fifth-grade class met in the morning in the library, where they learned the basics of financial literacy — vocabulary, how to save money, what a budget is — from Master Your Card, a program sponsored by Mastercard and EVERFI, an education technology company.

The students had taken an online program and were able to put their knowledge to the test in the Stuart library in front of Richmond Public Schools officials and representatives from the two companies.
